Kathy is a self-taught artist with no formal training; she works primarily with watercolour paints, as well as using inks and pencils. Her fantasy artwork has been published in two books, ‘Imagine 2006’ and ‘Faeries through the Seasons’ and more recently, her work has been licensed to merchandising companies for sale all over the world.
“ I’ve spent all my life creating art in one form or another; be it drawing, painting, calligraphy or card making. I began painting faeries and fantasy art around 5 years ago, which came from my love of all things magical , folklore tales and fantasy films such as Labyrinth. I launched my fantasy art website ( SilverWingsArt) and became licensed with companies featuring my art on their products. I included several pin up style fairies in my work and loved creating them! I’d been a fan of Marilyn Monroe and Diana Dors when I was younger, as well the iconic Emma Peel from the Avengers! I loved the glamour and beauty in many of the artworks I’d seen; I had already been sketching pin up ladies whilst I was at school, so this is something that has come full circle for me. I’m a huge fan of Burlesque; performers such as Immodesty Blaize and Dita Von Teese ... and the whole ensemble of glitz, glamour and tasteful sex appeal. I adore pin up work from artists such as Olivia De Berardinis who beautifully creates the vintage ‘cheesecake’ look. I love the 1940s and 1950s era anyway, so for me, I’m also given the chance to try and recreate a time gone by. The world does need more glamour, I feel! ”
A concept sketch usually takes a couple of hours to complete; sometimes longer. The character is sketched out in rough and all the costumes, hair etc is perfected as much as possible before it is transferred to watercolour paper ready for painting. Kathy prefers to use Windsor and Newton Watercolour paints on smooth watercolour paper. Kathy rarely works on any piece larger than 8 x 12 inches and producing fine detailed work on such a small scale is a real challenge. A completed painting may take anything from a couple of full days to a couple of weeks to finish, depending on how much detail and background, features in the piece.
